“I have been the Patron of the Ian Parry Scholarship for over 30 years and it has been so rewarding to see such young talent being recognised and supported at the very beginning of their careers”Sir Don McCullin, Patron and Trustee
In a world that is now inundated with misinformation and ‘fake news’, ethical, impartial journalism has never been more crucial.
Help us support future generations of young photojournalists so that the truth will continue to be told.
Ian Parry Scholarship Mission Statement: To promote and preserve ethical photojournalism by offering support to emerging photographers. The Ian Parry Scholarship has been supporting young emerging talent for more than 30 years.
The Scholarship’s namesake, Ian Parry, died doing what he was so passionate about and dedicated to documenting world events.
Ian was covering the Romanian revolution in 1989 for the Sunday Times when the aircraft he was traveling back to London in was shot down.
He was just 24 years old.
I launched the scholarship in Ian’s memory, determined to create something positive from such a tragic death and to offer support and encouragement to young emerging photojournalists who aspire to follow Ian’s passion.
In our 30-year history, we have helped hundreds of young aspiring talent by holding an annual competition awarding financial assistance and expertise to assist the finalists at the very beginning of their careers. Many recipients have become internationally recognised and renowned photojournalists who have documented important issues on assignment for the world’s finest news organisations.”

“Winning the Ian Parry scholarship meant a lot to me. With many awards I have the feeling they are mainly to advertise their own products and interests. They might be great in terms of publicity and prize money. While the Ian Parry scholarship is much more than this. I felt warmly welcome to the extended Ian Parry family. The people behind the award are very committed, warm hearted and truly supportive. “Nanna Heitmann, 2019 Sunday Times Award for Achievement
“The listening and sharing of experiences from the professionals gave me a greater perspective about the photography industry. In-fact, everything with Ian Parry has helped me to know more on how to shape my career, and it was a truly a happiness to meet Sir Don McCullin and Tom Stoddart”Farzana Hossen, 2013 Winner
