THE IAN PARRY SCHOLARSHIP 2012 Winner Adrian Fussell, Highly Commended Marcelo Pérez del Carpio and Commended Hilde Mesics Kleven

We would like to congratulate Adrian Fussell (1989, USA) Marcelo Pérez del Carpio (1983, Bolivia) and Hilde Mesics Kleven (1988, Norway) on winning the Ian Parry Scholarship 2012.

The judges felt that Adrian’s winning portfolio ‘My Name Is Victory’ communicated clear & intelligent visual story telling with great strength & depth of composition. The body of work follows the lives of the Patriot Guards, from Francis Lewis High School in Queens, NY, a community of immigrant youth who assimilate through a volunteer U.S. military program.

We received an unprecedented level of entries again this year, the standard was higher & applicants younger than ever before. Our judging is done as a process of elimination, so portfolios are removed from each round depending on their strength as a potential winner. The final round of portfolios from NY Institutions like Pathshala, Danish School of Journalism, LCC UK, Westminster UK, Ohio USA, Falmouth UK and Leiden University, showed such flair and extraordinary vision that the judges found it difficult to select just 3 finalists.

Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. That was 20 years ago, he was just 24 years of age. Aidan Sullivan, then picture editor created the Ian Parry Scholarship with Ian’s friends and family in order to build something positive from such a tragic death.

Each year we hold an international photographic competition for young photographers who are either attending a full-time photographic course or are under 24. Entrants must submit examples of their work from their portfolio and a brief synopsis of a project they would undertake if they won.

The prize consists of £3,500 towards their chosen assignment plus camera equipment from Canon and £500 to those awarded Highly Commended and Commended.

Save The Children are again sponsoring the award by offering one of the finalists an all expenses paid assignment. We are very happy that they will be collaborating with Hilde Mesics Kleven on her chosen assignment. In addition to this, the World Press Photo automatically accepts the winner onto its final list of nominees for the Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam. This is a significant prize for any photographer and continued with the support of the Sunday Times Magazine, which will publish all the finalist’s work on the 9th September 2012; the scholarship provides an excellent launch into a professional career in photography.

“Photojournalism is arguably the last bastion of truth in a muddled world where fact and fiction often blur. We are delighted that the IPS continues to support, encourage and assist aspiring young photographers who choose to dedicate their lives to this noble profession.”
Aidan Sullivan, Founder IPS

“Having the recognition and support of The Ian parry scholarship is the most wonderful opportunity to believe in the work you have begun and a chance to continue to make work you may only yet have wished and dreamed to do. Good luck!”
Leonie Hampton, Winner 2003

“The IPS is a unique chance for emerging photojournalists from around the world to not only have their work assessed and circulated within the wider context of the professional photographic industry but also published in a major national newspaper. We encourage more students to invest in this kind of free promotion.”
